Materials not recommended for outdoor kitchens

Is it OK to build outdoor kitchen with wood?
For example: in less than 6 months, wood will change its aesthetic appearance and become less attractive, as it is very much affected by UV rays, humidity, heat, etc.
Wood needs to be sanded and varnished at least twice a year, as it ages very quickly outdoors. This is always the case when wood is used as a worktop material or as the exterior cladding of your outdoor kitchen, such as the door fronts, sides and back of your outdoor island.
Is aluminum good for an outdoor kitchen?
Aluminum is not recommended for your summer kitchen, as it oxidizes. Aluminum oxide has a color very similar to that of aluminum and is not phytosanitary. Kitchens fitted with aluminum outdoor furniture are always painted, and the problem arises when they are scratched.
As the base material is aluminum, when furniture or shelves are scratched, the aluminum oxidizes. To avoid this, it has to be repainted, which means an additional cost for you.
What’s more, some types of paint are not resistant to outdoor use and UV rays, making them unsightly in the long term. There are outdoor kitchen companies that will make your furniture out of aluminum to cut costs, but in reality, if you want a quality product you don’t have to worry about, aluminum isn’t a good option.
Are brick barbecues good?
As far as concrete, stone or fire brick barbecues are concerned, these are highly porous materials that stain very easily, even if they are covered with a protective layer. These types of materials are generally used to make summer kitchen worktops or wooden barbecues.
In the case of wood barbecues, when they are first lit, they remain black forever as they are stained by smoke, soot and wood ash, and as the dirt penetrates the pores of the material, it is very difficult to remove the stain.
Is concrete good for outdoor kitchens?
Your outdoor kitchens made of concrete, microcement, firebrick, stone, concrete block, etc. are generally the most economical. You need to be very careful when building an outdoor kitchen or barbecue with these materials, as they are generally very heavy and, in the case of terraces, the ground generally won’t support their weight and can cause considerable material damage as well as accidents.
In the case of a garden installation, a good foundation must be laid to support the weight of your prefabricated summer kitchen in concrete, stone, firebrick or microcement. This foundation needs to be calculated by an engineer or architect, because if it’s not done properly, both the foundation and the kitchen can break due to what’s known as differential soil settlement.
